How To Plan A Wedding Reception

Dance first. Eat later.

Have a short dance set immediately after the introduction to the reception. Allowing people to get up and dance right after the cocktail hour is a great way to get everyone excited for the evening to come, and avoids guests needing to sit for a couple hours while dinner gets served.

Don't be afraid of slow songs.

Some people aren't big into raging on the dance floor, and that's ok. Give these types of guests a chance to get out on the dance floor with a loved one and sway to some slow tracks. Putting a couple slow songs in every 45 minutes or so also gives the guests who are busting loose on the dance floor a chance to catch their breath, grab a drink, and recharge to keep going hard until the party ends.

Put the first dance first.

Starting the reception with introductions followed by the first dance, then some dancing, is a great way to build energy on the dance floor. Your guests have traveled to your venue to see you and your newly minted spouse and will be excited to gather around the dance floor to watch you take your first dance. Don't let guests get distracted with other elements of the evening by putting the first dance during dinner or later in the evening. Having the first dance come first is key to making sure people pay attention, and capture this special moment in their mind.

Let your band / DJ do their thing.

You're hiring a band or DJ because they are experts in managing a wedding and getting people up to dance. The music they choose should reflect your tastes, but don't give them a playlist of 50 songs they absolutely must play. Trust their judgment and give into the dance floor vibes they create. If you don't like the tracks they are playing, no worries! Just ask them to switch it up. They won't take it personally (at least DJ G Events won't).
